Virology basics - any successful virus mutates towards higher spread, and lesser lethality. Deadlier viruses can't spread fast enough, as they kill their carriers too fast. Less deadly viruses spread broader, until contaminating the entire population.

Then we just live with these, like our old friends herpes and flu. Poor flu seems to lose the survival competition to covid lately - which, again, just confirms how less of a nuisance it is.
