Rowing machine, but that's in addition to your weight work.

The issue with single-muscle (or muscle group) machines is they don't involve all the muscles that would ordinarily contribute to the motion if the machine weren't supporting you in various ways.

Barbells and dumbbells ensure you call upon all the muscles necessary to maintain balance and good form, even those you aren't "targeting."

Admittedly there will be Poalrs smarter on this than I.

cable machines, smith machines and free weights are all equally useful, varying equipment used is guaranteed to give best results.

This, but sometimes exhausting those complimentary muscles can limit growth of the muscle you're targeting. Grip strength in general is an example. Machines allow targeted overload of the particular muscle without having to worry about collapsing or putting the weight down safely

Why not try to build something? I don't get this gym concept. Move some earth, rock, lumber. Do something with your energy, don't just burn it for gains, gain something with your gains.

Going to the gym is good for you. There is no substitute manual labor substitute for lifting weights. I say this as someone who did the hardest of manual labor for many years. You are not better than me just because you spend all your time building bomb-proof masturbation bunkers in the woods behind your uni-bomber cabin.

That's exactly why I'm better than you, and don't forget it.

Huh, I can't really argue against that.

This. Work hard. Play hard.

physical labour is not for the benefit of the labourer. gym equipment is the most optimal way to build more muscle.

[–] 0 pt

Sure. Optional optimal function

Just use the cage for safety. The smith machine balances the weights for you when you lift so not all of your muscles get activated. Just a false sense of gains.

My view on machines is they allow you to more safely overload the particular muscle group. They allow you to feel comfortable safely going to actual muscle failure

Certainly depends on your goals but, generally, the more ways you can train, the better.

Pull up bar, rack

Smith machine, rowing machine, and dumbbells.

The cable machines?
