Bushcraft camping was something I discovered in 2020 during the Kung Flu Plandemic. I'm prior military, so being out in the woods by myself wasn't an issue and became natural for me. I did 10 overnights in 2021.
Gatekeeping here: But going to a drive-in campground and setting up a tent isn't Bushcraft (or dispersed/backwoods). I'm a believer that you need to go off trail and get away from kids, dogs, trucks, RV's and noise to really camp and satisfy the need to reconnect with nature. Not everyone can do this, of course, so I understand people's reasons for "easy" camping at a drive in campground. To each their own. I prefer solitude and to challenge myself against the environment is all.
I'm a fan of both.
It's nice and easy to get out there just by driving to a nice site. Bring the barbeque and a cooler and enjoy a lake, beach, or river spot. Setup a canopy or awning, some comffy chairs by the fire.
But best is when you don't see anyone or anything. Takes a bit more effort and distance though.
I can respect that.
Back in 2019 I went to a drive in camp over Labor Day weekend with my son and we were kept up at 0330 by an asshole who drove in with his 5th wheel camper trailer and lifted, fart-pipe exhaust truck and took 15 minutes to back in, then for the next two hours, in the middle of the night you heard open and close of RV doors and truck doors. slam slam slam slam slam slam while his kids ran their mouths and made noise, while my tent was 10 meters away. There was garbage overflowing in all the trash cans, I had to listen to people's stupid ass "Billboard Top 20!!!" radio music, listen to their dogs barking, and hear car doors slamming and engines starting.
I had enough. Never again. I was so angry, so upset and so over dealing with other people that I decided after that trip I was done with public camping. After that I stumbled on Nagualero's (RIP) channel on YouTube and saw how he was Bushcraft camping in Sweden, with no noise, no other people, just silence other than "nature's soundtrack". I became obsessed and discovered Bushcraft literally through a YouTube algorithim
This is near the top of my mountain out in Appalachia, it's my go to quick camp spot. I'll sometimes do backwoods but prefer to stay close to home because of my dogs.
Yep. I've got 2 or 3 private camp locations that I'm 99% sure I'm the only person who knows about them. Had to get to, across varying terrain and good luck to the US Forest Service if they want to hump back and ticket me for "trespassing off traill". They're going to be tired if they wan to serve me that fine!
