A Labrador would fix that for you.
I've got one of the best pointing dogs I've ever seen. Not worth a shit for retrieving though. If he does fetch it up he wants to eat it and I have not been able to break that habit.
pointers are great for upland, but for waterfowl, you need a retriever. Why not both?
Agreed, I did not take the pointer while I was duck hunting. Only while going after the pheasant and quail. On those days the pheasant were just coming up too soon for the most part and the few I did have a chance to shoot were flying way out into the cattail swamps. I did manage to shoot one but it took 20 minutes to find it. The dogs were helpful but I was really wishing I had my old yellow lab. She was the runt of her litter and she could find any down bird anywhere, anytime. My current dog is great for finding and pointing but not worth a shit for retrieving.
