The "old way" certainly had it's merits. A woman really couldn't only (that's important) sell looks (although she would certainly show them because, of course) but also other qualities; play piano, or sing, had studied natural remedies etc. As for men, there was never a time in history that they didn't need to prove themselves, but in at least on role of their lives (as they saying goes) "can you dance?" (that took more than one meaning, and in the best way)
