I wrote a post detailing some problems I had with a supposedly ready-to-go device, and how it didn't work because it required a lot of things the manufacturer didn't bother telling you. They simply assumed that you were going to have the correct set of circumstances without you knowing what those were.

I shared that with a co-worker and he goes "Dude have you ever thought of writing articles for like engadget or medium? Why are you not on medium?"

I said "Nah bro, I don't suck cock so I can't write for them."

Your friend may have missed the mark, but he's going in the right direction.

You're a smart person who can write and explain things well. We all see that here. You should put those talents to use for the betterment of people like you (like most of us here). I try to do this in different ways as well. (I mean, we all should.)

So do it. Maybe not engadget or medium, but there must be some places where your writing would be well-received.

I write publicly, and it's linked to various professional places where the people would be interested in the subject matter - so it's out there.

Technical writing is a skill.

You're halfway there: Skilled technical writing is an art. Worked in engineering for over 30 years. Rare is the combination of technical expertise, command of the written word and the finesse to put it all together effectively. I can write nearly perfect technical specifications, technical reports, etc. - well organized, thorough and fairly succinct. Everything a geek/nerd needs to do to communicate effectively with other geeks/nerds.

What I CAN'T do is consistently put that humanistic touch to it, such that it would also be interesting for a layperson to read. Had an occasional minor moment of brilliance in that regard, but our friend @stupidbirdis the total package - a rare bird indeed!

Thank you, you flatter me.

It's kind of odd, but I never enjoyed this kind of thing in school, maybe because we were forced to write about dumb things. For example, I had a teacher that wanted us to keep a personal journal that we were required to write in as part of the grade. I hated that, but that was probably more I didn't want to write that kind of garbage. Sure, we're all concerned with ourselves and upkeep, but some are far too concerned with that to the point of narcissism. Those ones had no difficulty turning out pages of drivel.

Thats true - it is one thing to document technical things accurately, another altogether to make it consumable.

It really irritates me how cucked all those sites are these days.
