Cheers!
We've had a couple of generations grow up without a serious in-your-face communist threat. China doesn't count because they're a painted whore that looks pretty on the surface, Cuba and North Korea aren't really threats.
Now I feel old as dirt.
Didn’t realize this was the date
It's insane to think that there are still so many soviet boomers who long for or even beg for the return of communism. They, and the younger ignorants who repeat after them. It really is a devious trap - you have the old farts with survivorship bias because they weren't gulag'd (and even some whose friends or relatives were legit think it's a good thing), and then you have the absolute mayhem and dumpster fire that is the current way of life in post-soviet countries proving that what they call "capitalism" that came to replace it has failed. And the only valid criticism the naysayers may have is the deficit of foreign goods and lack of internet, that's pretty much it. On every other aspect, it was indeed way ahead of what we have now. Kinda fucked up and sad, right? When literally the world's most genocidal regime seems more reasonable than whatever clown show is happening at the moment.
Where were you?
I was sitting in a kitchen watching a old tube tv (I think a 8") late at night.
6th grade winter break. I was at home, playing the new video games I got for Christmas probably for the NES. I wasn't much of a news guy back then, but I probably asked about how it would affect the Olympics.
I do remember my parents making fun of people buying parts of the Berlin Wall at Macy's or Penny's. They claimed there's no way of knowing if it came from the actual wall or if it was someone trying to make a quick buck with graffitied bits of concrete.
Interesting. Also, glad you had that, back then I wish I had something like that.
I wish I knew why I remember the painted concrete story, but not other parts of that part of my life.
