I have my suspicions of which animals were granted some higher spiritual plane, but I can't know for sure.

I tend to go for the "k" type reproduction strategy animals (r/K dichotomy). So like wolves, but not rabbits.

Birds, real or robotic, definitely do not have souls or spirits. In some cases, not even brains.

This is true. Birds can be beautiful and behave (fly, sing, migrate) beautifully, but they lack individual souls.
