Get some flat, smooth stones from a river. Check them for sharp edges. Place them in the pup's bowl, on top of their food, while they eat. This has worked for me with a few pups. They begin to test what's edible in their bowl by chewing a little (instead of inhaling like a vacuum).

No man, you're supposed to get a toy feeder so they track kibble all around the house.

I had a friend once with a huge mastiff great dane mix. When I sat on the couch for the first time, I noticed dog food between the cushions and thought it was curious.

Then I saw him playing with the other dogs. When he got really excited, he would go get a mouthful of food from his dish and proceed to frolick about, consuming precisely half of the mouthful, depositing the other half in many places.

He was a good boy.

Interesting but scary. Our old girl eats from one of those maze bowls and she still inhales the whole bowl in a minute.

It's also a good way to teach your dog to be more cautious in general. Early childhood development is a critical phase of life and it's the same for dogs too.

That sounds like a great way to ruin your dogs teeth. Maybe when they are puppies and don't have adult teeth.

In practice that hasn't ever been a concern. Every pup I've done this with goes from a mad fierezy to ginger nibbling.

They're smart enough to realize there are now non-edible things in their bowl. The stones are much larger than the kibble, too large to really fit into the mouth much (wide, flat, smooth)

I do monitor them closely. I suppose if I didn't get the desired outcome with another dog, I'd try a different approach.

One can also train a pup to use just one part of the yard for a toilet. Dogs be smart an sheeit.
