Hubby and I use the savings/investments generated under the trump administration to buy our first rental unit/personal home. We inherit tenants, three Indians in their 20’s, the type that can’t afford slumlord conditions (approx. $600 under section 8 pricing).

After realizing that our unit was not in condition, we hired contractors to help us fix the situation asap. Contractors would be there during the day, I would rush home to help manage and complete tasks. One evening I come to the house and the Indians come downstairs to talk to me.

From the corner of my eye I see one of them reach into my purse and steal the house keys for my unit. I give them the chance to return it, but they are not interested. After calling hubby to confirm that I didn’t leave the keys at our old property, I call the locksmith, waiting a few hours for him to arrive. I pay the emergency re-keying fee and get every door updated by midnight. I take a half day from work to distribute new key copies to the contractors directly because there was damage to our key lock box. Hubby thinks I’m over-reacting, that I may have wasted a few hundred dollars.

A week later I receive a strange text message from one of the Indians. “SometimeSage, there is something wrong with the door. We’re locked out”. At this point I was not locally available, so I contact our GC, ask him what’s going on. He swears that he hasn’t touched anything in their apartment, also confirms that all keys are working, and that he has seen the Indians coming and going from their unit without issue.

I press them for more information. They admit that they were trying to get into our unit, but wouldn’t admit how or why.

They just wanted to let me know that someone had re-keyed a unit that didn’t belong to them.

Do you think I avoided squatters?

I think you need to get rid of any brown person in your life.
