Eastern front. He was born in 1927 so he was only 18 when they surrendered. Thankfully he was on the Western side so I was eventually born in Norway before being brought to the US on the West side of the Iron curtain. I was born in Norway a couple of years or so after the cold war ended in 1992, moved to US in 1996 at 4 after the Balkan wars and grew up here. Dad was also a soldier but for the Allied side. Kind of ironic father and son fought against each other hypothetically.

His unit would have been very fortunate to surrender to Americans, possibly in Hungary? Units of Wiking were destroyed in Berlin, but the German order of battle allowed extreme flexibility regarding troop movements and reinforcements.
He was just a kid. He didn't see much combat and was barely 18 when the war ended. The entire eastern front was in a retreat and he enlisted at 17 due to the desperation and Norway being a nazi puppet state.
