I travel for work, about 10 weeks a year staying in hotels. My employer reimbuses my expenses, provided I have a receipt. Without a receipt, they will only give $500 max per week. I have never been able to get a receipt from a Holiday Inn without screaming at someone on the phone who speaks Hindi as a primary language. They've changed my email address multiple times (thinking that's the problem,) also the spelling of my first name, the spelling of my last name, my phone number. My last stay was in Cleveland during a convention. Cost me just under $800 because they jack up their rates when they know there's a large crowd coming. A week later, and no receipt. 2 calls to the hotel, and 3 calls to IHG. The sheboon at the hotel barely speaks English, so most likely can't figure out email. Called IHG twice, was told they'd send my receipt. Never happened. Second call, I got a case number to use if I have to call back after 48 hours. 48 hours later, no receipt. Called IHG again. "We can't help you with a receipt. You have to call the hotel." "I did call the hotel. They can't figure it out, so I called you guys. Then you called the hotel. They still can't figure it out. What other solutions do you have?" "We can't get a receipt, only the hotel can do that." "Then why do I have a case number? What's that for?" "We use that to log calls that we receive. But you have to call the hotel for a receipt." "Oh.. They why did the first guy tell me to call back?" "Sir, there is nothing we can do to help you."

Fuck those guys.

I've stayed at a few dives as well. The OLD San Jose Hilton, looked like a small, grungy '60s hotel with old carpets in the early-mid '90s ... a real dump. I stayed there on 2 occasions only because the better hotels were booked up those weeks. I stayed at the Kosit Hotel in Haytai, Thailand for a couple of nights, what an old dump, smelled like someone emptied a can of RAID in the room just before I arrived. I stayed at some dump near Niagara Falls too, that place smelled like someone dumped a bottle of Lysol around the room just before we got there. The Omni in Washington DC sucked too, at least the lower level rooms were underwhelming. Damp, musty, old.

That's about the worst rooms I can remember in my travels.

You've had a good life.

We had an excellent onsite travel agent that booked our flights, rooms and transportation. She helped to make that part of the business trip problem free and was a real asset if you had a change of plans and needed to change flights or accommodations on the fly. I would take a week of vacation on the return leg of some of my business trips, drop out somewhere to visit friends across the country or places of interest - effectively getting free round trip airfare for 2-3 US vacations per year. I tried to make the most of it if schedules allowed.
