Grandad Bill was in the merchant marine, 1st mate of a freighter. One of his ships got torpedoed by a japanese sub, and he spent 2 weeks in a life boat before rescue. Folks forget about all the people who served in the background (support roles) and don't think that without them nothing would have gotten done.
This is true, to include all those who worked in the factories, docks, etc, etc. All are heroes.
Well, "Rosie the Riveter" got plenty of PR exposure. Not so much for pvt. Joe Shmo who shuffled papers and fetched coffee. No glory in that task, but vital none the less.
