Living forever is the goal. Your mom is only as old as you let her feel. Get her up and doing things. Telling stories. Having memories and sharing them. She's raised a family and has worked at that goal her entire life. Sounds like she succeeded admirably and enjoying retirement. She's only wasting away if you see it as such or if she does.

She's a shell of her former self. Sad , I try to cheer her up , she could be in some nigg infested snake pit , her place is not bad. She can't really walk anymore .

Old age is a curse

I usually go to an assisted living facility for work a fee times a month. They're nice places. These are for the seniors with money.

But the memory wards are so fucking trippy.

It is interesting to see how different people handle dementia, or alzheimers, or generalized Rot of the Brain.

For a lot of these people, it is a systematic genocide of their pleasant memories. Like every nice moment of their life has been erased, like only terror and confusion can exist in this single moment in time.

Why can't I feel teeth that used to be inside of my mouth, why are my pants down, and why is this crazy Jamaican lady whiping my ass?

But others, they go on a pleasant mental vacation.

Oh fuck, I can't remember last night, but this looks like some sort of hotel. Aw, God. I must've gotten really plastered last night. I shit myself. But thus Jamaican women is whiping my ass. Is she a hooker? Am I in Jamaica? Fuck I went to Jamaica and hired a hooker. That's why the staff here is all black. Cheryl is gonna be pissed. Oh shit, the Phillies are on.

My stepfather was like that when my mother moved him into a facility. He thought he was at a hotel. When we ate in the cafeteria, he always said he liked this restaurant, praised the food and the service, and we should come here more often.

My grandfather thought he was in a hospital ship in the pacific theatre during WWII. Kept on telling the nurses he was fine, needed to be cleared immediately.

Old age and insanity and Brain Rot reveal so much about a person.

I really hope you are doing well.

It is hard, going through it.

The will to live is a basic driving force. As we age and have to make more and more accommodations for our failing facilities it's amazing just how much we find that we can live with. Amazing... sad... call it what you will but it's the reality.

Some, of course, choose to check out early but most hang on for dear life right to the end. "Make it quick and painless" is something we all say, but we also say "but not yet".

I’ve watched two of the most important people in my life become inmates at the “we is nurses” penitentiary.

Had the same thought visiting my mom.

You will be kept alive for an unbearable number of untold years. You will enjoy it. Otherwise you're a racist.

Bigot.

this winter will be interesting. millions without heat or food in europe and the wider world. grand solar minimum coming into full swing, it will be an unusually cold one. hungary, shivering people with nothing to lose. hell, they are already protesting in holland and france.

Fertilizer shortages are already here too. Interesting times coming up soon ( hopefully)

My thought as well. We just endured record heat, and if Winter is going to be a mirror, it is going to be cold, cold, cold.

You don't have to be weak when you're old. I watched a video of a 70 year old guy doing muscle-ups. I literally cannot do that as a much younger man, and I used to box. But this 70 year old exercised every day, and always ate clean. If you want to be strong when you're old, you have to do the work, and put away the junk food.

I work out , in very good shape for my age , but that's no guarantee. Things can still happen

Jack Kevorkian had the right idea.

If your parent is in LTC and you care about them. Make sure to watch every fucking thing that the care center is doing especially if medications change for any reason. I worked with LTC for a while and I will take a long walk off a short cliff before I allow anyone to put me into one.

Over 75% of all deaths in LTC are preventable and are caused by human error. The people taking care of your elders are in many cases damn near incompetent. They might be nice but that wont help when they give someone a 3x dose of blood thinners.

I saw what Kent posted and the memory ward can be really nice or super creepy. Several LTC's actually set up "fake" bus stops outside of the ward since sometimes the people would "escape" and they would see the bus stop and go to sit down and wait for the bus. Made it a lot easier to find them. (That is one of the good parts).

Can confirm, get’n old sucks. I was caretaker for my both my mom and stepdad. Bought a house third door down from them so I could. They both came down with brain cancer. It was a long hard three years watching them decline. Glad I was able to do it for them, but it took a lot out of me. Glad your mom has a place to care for her and you are spared, not the trouble, but the witnessing and brutality of, for lack of better words, life in decay of someone you love on a daily basis. It’s heartbreaking. They literally become as helpless as a baby.

Reminds me of the scene in Grumpy Old Men that went something like this -

You hear Jack died?

No, how’d he go?

Died in his sleep.

That motherfucker.
