Supposedly that's why Hitler had the mustache he did. In ww1 he had a big mustache, they got hit with mustard gas and his mask wouldn't seal. Shortly after he chopped the sides of the mustache off. Interesting historical fact.

How is that dubious? That's a factual statement. There is no argument against it. A gas mask will not seal with more than half a day's growth of facial hair.

Your keyword is 'well-kept.' --Beards are great, I wore different versions of facial hair throughout my earlier life. I think it's actually more work to maintain a good beard than it is to just shave though. Now that I'm a little older I shave, but only maybe about twice a week. Maybe when I get super-old I'll just let it go and have a long, grey/white unmaintained beard.
