Mid-80's, me and a few of my friends got over 600 miles of rides mostly in the back of pickups after working a summer in AK. We'd split into pairs and meet up at a designated town. No cell phones back then, just look or wait for the other pair to show up on the side of the road. We were just 19-20 at the time, so not very scary looking. After that summer, I wound up giving rides to hitchhikers who may not have looked upstanding, but appreciated the lift.

I guess I could've made this an AskPoal question instead: Can you trust strangers not to murder you?

Can you trust strangers not to murder you?

No.

When I got out of the AF back in 1980, took a bus to chi-town, got ripped off for a bag of weed, bought two bottles of Gold Tequila, new weed order, got a greyhound to Seattle, hung out and met some unsavoury ppl, then hooked up with a " magasine subscription outfit" worked my way to Sacramento, then hitched to Washington dc. Got a lift to Rock Springs wyoming, (looking back the guy was high AF), he booked a room in some motel, striaght-up no homo, this was back in the day when even strung out ppl where ok. then he went to the office made a call and said to me that I have the room for three days if I want it. OF COURSE! I stayed, then I had to leave. Walked back to the interstate, used bushcraft so I didn't freeze. Then continued on my journey. One week after arriving at home, my last paycheck with adjustments and all came in the post (982$), called my mom she cashed the check with rebate, and three days later I was on a flight back to London. Hitchhiking is a fantastic way to travel. I am now 60 in dec. thinking of hitching across Europe as a B-day gift- once more into the breach my freind.

7 years ago I hitchiked 30 miles daily to and from work. Never had trouble getting a ride. Usually hitchhiking short distanves takes me about twice as long as driving myself the same distance.

In 2007 my then girlfriend (now wife and mother of 7 children) and I hitched from Dallas to San Francisco, then down to San Diego. From Texas to the California border every ride was truckers. If I remember it was only three rides but the last guy wouldn't take us across the California border.

San Fransicko was disgusting and full of degenerates even then.

The last time I saw a hitchhiker was some years ago when I was driving on the Cross-Bronx expressway after a job when I noticed a "white" guy with a cardboard sign saying, "Boston" near an off-ramp a few exits passed Yankee Stadium. I can only pray the poor dumb bastard made it there safely.

I drive a semi for a living. Saw some hitchhiking yesterday on I-70 headed east. Was that you?

Hitchhiking on 70 seems a whole lot like going from bad to worse, regardless of the direction.

I do hitchhike sometimes. And I pick hitchhikers when I see one. I never had shady stuff happen. I'm not sure I would do it if I was a woman tho. I don't know why. I've been pick up by women before and I've picked up women too.

I picked up a hitch hiker once during a downpour and dropped him off at truckstop and gave him $20.

It is less common, so are many other typical high social trust activities. Letting kids play in the neighborhood unsupervised, hitchhiking… I think tv gaslighting how terrible and dangerous everything is, and the rise of multiculturalism (less aligned values and more violent cultures) play in. I’ve done it, and I e licked people up, no problem was ever had. I’m far far away at the moment, and now it’s a daily occurrence that I give someone a ride, total strangers that don’t speak the same language as me. Neither the media nor Africans are a part of society here…

"I’ve done it, and I e licked people up" how did they taste?

Shit. Goddamn mobile autocorrect. That’s ducking gay.

After I was discharged in 1972, I hitchhiked from Detroit to SF, then to LA, then to Las Vegas - I hitchhiked back to Detroit about 3 years later - all in all it was an unforgettable experience.

Long ago, as a young Marine, I hitched all over California and North Carolina. I sometimes hitched in Texas when I got back home, when I was "between" cars. I didn't have much money. It was a different time back then. I met a lot of great people. There were a few times though when I kept my hand on my knife for the whole ride.
