It is a suppressor, not a silencer. Hollywood is fake and gay.
There are two laws that bug the hell out of me, simply because they make no sense at all, so I thought I'd talk about them for a bit. They do not exist everywhere, but they exist in many places.
One is the law against switchblade knives. These are knives that open by pushing a little button on their sides. When open, they lock into position so that they won't close on your fingers while you use them.
There is a huge benefit to having a pocket knife that can be opened with one hand and that locks into the open position. Both are safety features. They make using the knife in emergencies easier and safer. But switchblades are banned in many places. Why? Because of the way they look and sound, I guess. I'm not kidding, there is no other reason to ban them.
Typically, switchblades have been Italian-designed stilettos with long thin blades. They look like they are designed for knife fights. However, there are many switchblades that look like ordinary pocket knives. It makes no sense at all to ban a knife design that is safer and more convenient because of the way it looks. It's crazy. These knives were banned sometime in the Dark Ages (maybe the 1950s when white delinquents wore leather jackets).
Today, other similar self-opening pocket knives are also banned, such as the gravity knife, which slides open when pointed downward and a button is pressed, but has no spring, like the switchblade. However, "assisted opening" knives are not banned, and these knives open with one hand ... wait for it ... by pushing a little stub with your fingertip. They work the same way as a switchblade, but your finger replaces the spring. It makes no sense at all. None.
The second law that chews my ass is the law banning silencers on guns, or as gun nuts like to call them, "suppressors." It is a fact that firing a gun without a silencer can, and often does, cause permanent hearing damage and hearing loss. There are hundreds of thousands of people walking around with hearing loss that was due to the sound of guns. They may have forgotten to bring their earplugs or earmuffs one time, and said, "Screw it, I'm going shooting anyway." That's all it takes to damage your ears permanently.
There are cheap, efficient, effective silencers that screw or clip onto the barrels of rifles and handguns, and that do not impair the shooting of the gun at all. With these silencers in place, you can stand next to the guns being fired all day with no hearing protection, and there is no danger of hearing damage or hearing loss. Yet these silencers are banned. Why? Who knows. Because people somehow think that a louder bang from a gun is useful in detecting that it is being fired? The thing is, these silencers are not even close to silent -- you can hear the gun being fired from a good distance away. It just won't damage your hearing for life.
I want two things -- the laws against switchblades and similar automatic pocket knives to be lifted everywhere; and a new law to be made making it mandatory that all new guns be sold with built-in silencers, so that the noise of the guns will not cause physical injury to those who use them or stand next to them. Two very rational requests of our lawmakers.
