They call those "rain lamps" or "oil lamps" and I don't think they are made anymore.

I've made one out if a lava lamp once a long time ago. I don't remember the type of oil I used but I do know it wasn't vegetable oil. It had a really Low boiling point. It was cool when I put the food coloring in and switched the type of bulb it used. It was good.
