They didn't have to leave the Soviets in 1991 (after being part of the Russian empire for centuries), ask to join NATO and the EU, or fall out with Russia after voting out pro Kremlin Yanukovych, or buy in weapons from the West and dragging every other country into their conflict with a Super Power.
Putin doesn't even have to invade, he's got everyone dancing around. He just has to yank Ukraine's chain every few weeks
