I know this has probably been said a lot now, but I've been needing a third PC for the last year while also upgrading my main PC.

Due to the GPU shortages already having been a problem, I was already going to keep my 1080 Ti for the lounge PC and was initially interested in pairing it with something like one of the new Alder lake 12400 - 12600K, keeping my current 10900K for my main PC.

Now with all the ongoing shortages and pricing issues, it seemed a better idea to eventually move the whole 10900K build to the lounge with a 4K screen, and consider a 12900K main PC with my 1080 Ti until I manage to get a new GPU (waiting like an idiot for RTX 4000s now).

I just saw DDR5 pricing - £750 for 2x16 Gb and instantly NOPED out of that idea.

I just wanted a couch PC gaming setup, and cant get that.

My second PC is a mere Pentium g4560 & Radeon 550 spec for a backup / test bench / dual boxing spec, initially I was going to stick that in the lounge and use Steam remote play, but this induces a lot of latency and I still need a dual box rig.

Oh the number of people that have said to me - 'A PC in the lounge? With a keyboard and mouse? Why not a console?'

Because Steam OS with big picture mode and where can you even get any of the new consoles?

No ray tracing still. No 4K lounge gaming still. My lovely new couch and media units are sitting untouched and neglected.

I have both 3.0 and 4.0 nvme drives in my x570 mobo, the 3.0 writes and reads almost as fast as the 4.0 one. There is next to zero difference, it's not worth the $100 premium for a 3-5% gain at best. Maybe it matters if I were a content creator and every minute counts.

The AMD MB's that are capable of 4.0 Have additional features. Currently the chipsets on say the B550 are not taking advantage of the nvme 4.0 through the chipset, although it is capable. it's done through the CPU and only if the CPU supports it.. Bios updates in the future should take advantage. I believe AMD is trying to squelch that at the moment on the lower end boards. Taking into account the additional PCI lines it's a no brainer to purchase a motherboard that supports it to take advantage of future upgrades.

My B550 Motherboard was purchased new for $59.00 The 500G NVME 4.0 drive was $69.00 I do not see the $100 premium. At most I paid $30. difference for a 4.0 capable system. I do not play games. I was simply interested in hardware that would stand the test of time and have a reasonable resell value when I upgrade. As far as the difference in speed, I am not really that snobbish about it to benchmark the drive, then install a 3.0 and compare. I can say that EVEN if it does not make any difference whatsoever my resell value will be higher because most consumers see bigger is better and 4 is bigger than 3. You did not indicate what CPU you are using.
