Telegram has a desktop client, but they've changed the way it operates. You used to be able to sign up on desktop (phone number still required) but you cannot do that. You must sign up on a mobile device now.

Telegram has also started fucking with shit and advertising is slated to start showing up in channels. There's also the "Who, exactly, is looking at the closed-end server for Telegram?" question.

Yes, it's like pretty much every other messenger system that isn't XMPP, and that's only because you can run your own your way.

Even "privacy" messengers like signal are phone-based and require phone numbers. No thank you.

I do use telegram, but it's for low-value stuff only. Friend sends pictures from their trip to somewhere? Sure. Discussions of sensitive data? No sir.
