People have dogs for lots of reasons but I am becoming increasingly thankful for my dog every day. My dog is not a guard dog. My dog is not vicious in any way. But my dog has a big bark and makes it virtually impossible for anyone to get within 50 yards of my house without me knowing about it. We live in a time when the Stazi will come to your house if you say the wrong thing at a school board meeting. Good perimeter security and alarms can give you very valuable warning.

I have a nice security system and there is always some shit like a spider web across the cameras, which makes it trigger all the time thus get ignored. I would like to get a Doberman. A friend has a Doberman mix and it is so awesome and well behaved despite having no training at all.

On average how much does a big dog cost to feed per month?

My dog gets triggered all the time too... multiple times a day I get to listen barking. but it is not because of spiders, its because of the UPS truck or the mailman. But a lot of time it is because one of the neighbors are out walking their dog on the street. I'm cool with it though I have learned the difference between her 'delivery guy bark' and her 'rival dog bark'. The important thing is that she also has a 'sketchy guy' bark, a 'emergency' bark and a 'big scary animal' bark. She knows what is normal and what is not... IMO way better than a security system but having both is even better.

Cost per month depends mostly on what you feed them. There is really cheep (and typically crappy) food as well as ultra-posh over priced stuff and everything in between. A really big dog can eat quite a lot though. Expect to pay a minimum of $30 a month in food but if you want to treat them well this could easily be in the $50-$60 range. This is for dry food only, which is what I do. Wet/canned food will be more and the gourmet fresh/frozen stuff is stupid. The sky is the limit but if you do it wisely it can be very affordable.

That's not bad. My extended family does Farmers Dog and the packets come in the mail customized with the dogs name on it. Must be a fortune.
