Propaganda trying to get kids to eat spinach.....
He was first a cartoon then this...
Olive Oyl was voiced by Mae Questel, same voice as Betty Boop.
He was a comic strip character that appeared in a strip called "Thimble Theater," which featured the Oyl family, headed by Castor Oyl. Olive is Castor's sister. This strip is where Roughhouse's Diner, and Wimpy the mooch, originated.
Popeye represents the strength of man, Bluto represented the hubris, sweet pea represents the future hope of man, olive oil represents the ugliness of womens lies, wimpy is actually you and me.
(Just kidding, I made all that up on the fly, just to mess with popeye fans.) Never been a fan of spinach, but I did enjoy those old popeye cartoons.
I raised my kids on NO animated cartoon crap.
