Whatever happened to the whole Windows 10 would be the last numbered release of Windows? Now we have Windows 11?

No, not even close. It only launches the latest NT kernel and Windows shell. The kernel and system libraries are quite backwards compatible however, supporting software back to Windows 2000 but generally not much from the DOS days prior. It does however additionally launch a Linux kernel as a driver if you have WSL installed.
