Been resisting this for years, but the women asked me to try it out. why didn't i do this years ago. everything just works. i have the lappy tied into my boat systems, same for the tab and phone. m1 macs have insane low power consumption, while doing high level tasks such as video rendering for our yt channel. i sold my simrad screens for ipads at the wheel and at the nav station. the only thing it sucks at is gaming, keeping the pc for that, but man it eats power comparably. my inability to change who i was limited me.

zero? so no updating "packages?" Can you integrate with a NMEA 2000 system without using the legacy terminal?

IEC 61162-3 is CAN compatible.

I don't know. I hate CANbus shit and avoid it whenever possible. What operating system and what software do you want to use to talk to it?

edit: Just a precursory survey suggests there are multiple CANbus manipulation packages out there, several being free.

I use LivePatch. It works just fine.

Dude. Enjoy your new Mac. Good luck adding RAM or changing the SSD when you eventually want to.
