Also, learn about composting. It's a great way to dispose of food scraps and prepare substrate should you need the growing medium.

(Start with a small bag of any soil, add a bit of perlite, then just keep adding scraps. If it gets too wet, add stuff like shredded paper etc)

I get a rat that wants to live in the compost. What do I do with that aside from poison?

Snakes are notorious for compost camping, as the biodegradable processes generate heat. The cold blooded reptiles (such as snek) love this, along with loving the free rats.

As for getting rid of the snake... lol
