I found old Voat was more "free wheeling", or "almost anything goes," which can be hilarious at times, and injurious at other times. You developed a thick skin. Nothing wrong with that either.
New Voat/talk has almost none of that really. Still some very good posting which makes visits worthwhile. Old Voat is gone gone gone.
Poal seems to be less tolerant of trolling behavior in general, and quicker to pounce on potential trouble. A line has to be drawn before the law does it for you, lest your freedom lead to state intervention. Poal draws that line more conservatively than old Voat ever did.
As far as freedom of speech goes, on a sliding scale of most to least I would say it ranked old Voat, then Poal, then new Voat/talk.
Quality of speech is another discussion entirely. Comparison of quality is, well, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
Old Voat is gone. I would love to read a book wtitten by Justin Chastian. The title should be "How I Controlled the World and Could Have Conquered It, But I Got Scared".

I agree, Voat certainly helped to toughen your skin. Poal though seems much more stable, less DDoS attacks, and much less retards in general. I'd give much credit to the developers of Poal for that. They seemed to have fixed those issues that would take down Voat periodically. As an ex-Goat, I'm liking the new digs.
AOU was on Voat 3 years ago. Like a prophet, he foresaw the coming failure of Voat and prepared for us a divine manger whereby we all shall graze in comfort. I now worship AOU as a messenger of God. lol
