I had an Idiot Indian recruiter bothering me today about a job in somewhere, New Jersey. While I have no desire to move there, I looked over the job. It's a very senior level tech, pretty much an engineer position. Lots of self-directed engineering duties and skills required.

Decided to ask about the pay rate, just 'cause. Idiot goes it's 50k a year.

While that's a good wage for the Middle Of Ohio (not for this type of work, however,) that's a shit-tier wage for this location in New Jersey, it's roughly double to cost of living from my current location, and the calculator I used doesn't take into account taxes and other incidental costs. I told the idiot this, and even sent him the link to the calculator I used, pre-filled with locations. No reply of course.

I'm sure the company in question will cry about not being able to find someone for what's essentially $12.50 an hour here in my location for a position where you're going to need at least 10+ years of experience in the field. Even at the rate they're offering, it's not equal to the skills and duties they listed.

(He replied moments after I wrote this with the same boilerplate garbage. )

There is a huge distortion in the hiring market. Descriptions never match reality, and HR (not the hiring manager) is doing the hiring. AI keyword crawlers are absolute garbage. It's rough.

I agree, but this one was very well matched to my skill set and experiences, even some of the specialty things I've done. It's that 1 in 100,000 where the keyword match actually gets you a good fit. This one looks to have been written by someone with at least a good grasp of the company's technical competencies.

A senior electrical tech where I am can ask for $60k and easily get it. One where you're doing engineering level diagnostic and design can fetch more. In high-price New Jersey, asking someone to move for what's not even fast food wages isn't going to work.

I love hearing people that know their ability and worth and not afraid to require a commensurate income level. Not failing to mention, as you have said, the move and all the other sundry details.

Good on you, bird. I cant say stupid. ; )
