Using your ISP's DNS, or even worse, Google DNS, can break things. Don't use these, or Cloudflare's DNS.

Someone here posted that they had trouble viewing archive.today links, the cause seems to be Google DNS. I can't remember who posted that information, but thank you.

I'm currently using OpenDNS with a handful of others as alternates. Things broken immediately resumed operation.

Another note, if you are not using something like dns over https, all dns queries are sent in "cleartext" and unencrypted. As such, anyone between you and the DNS server can see the client that is requesting and what they are requesting.

Your DNS requests is also another way for them to track you.

If you have an ISP you're already suffering from a MITM attack.

Cloudflare? Uh..........

I tried using their DNS servers for about a month. Its amazing how many sites they are blocking. At one point they even were blocking voat.co back when that was a thing.

Yes, which is why telling people to use Cloudflare over Jewgle or your ISP is absurd. OH NO! The frying pan is hot! Jump out onto the burner!

Sooooo, what DNS services don't block anything?

No good options ATM. I run my own local DNS that is seeded from the root servers.. Not encrypted though. Working on something better.

I was using Cloudflare and Google both where blocking archive sites. Moved to OpenDns and no issues.

I just recently changed to OpenDNS for the same reason. I put some of the adblocker DNS sites as numbers 5 and 6 and 7 and 8 in the router, just in case. Lots of fallback, but it should prefer OpenDNS.

So OpenDNS is the only solution?

I don't know how the adblocker ones work, OpenDNS seems to work well enough.

I have no idea what any of that means

DNS is the system that translates addresses like www.deadniggers.com into their respective IP addresses. Google's DNS is a commonly used site, because it's easy to remember at 8.8.8.8. But Google has been getting pissy lately.

If you don't know what any of that means, chances are your router is simply grabbing your ISP's DNS servers.
