I only started hearing about "herd immunity needing 80%/75%" when it was being reported in the mainstream media. Prior to that, it required 90-95% of the "herd" to be immune.
Further, the requirement increases depending on how infectious the virus is. Delta is supposed to be highly infectious.
Vaccinations apparently rapidly decline in effectiveness. However, as has been shown in other coronavirus infections, naturally acquired immunity also rapidly declines in effectiveness. We've evolved to treat this type of virus as an ephemeral threat, not worthy of devoting resources to long-term immunity.
The only way to get through this without losing our minds will be to stop freaking out and get back to business, soldier on, and take the losses as they come.
