I'll try to help you out without posting the usual snide comments. BTW, this post should have been made to the "Technology" sub-forum on Poal, not here. Admin can move this thread if necessary.

-- First, if the computer shuts itself off at random times, check to make sure you don't have a "timer" running; Windows has buried in the "Control Panel" settings for times the PC should be running and times when it shuts down.

-- Second, Make sure that the inside of the computer case is clean of dust and all vents are unobstructed; overheating will cause a special interrupt to happen which will shut it down.

-- Third, if you are using Windows, restart your computer from a "power off" and press the "F8" key down immediately after you turn the computer on; this will start it in what is called "safe mode". Don't expect to do any work in that mode -- just leave the computer running for a day or so to see if it shuts itself off.

-- If, after you reboot your computer, it seems wonky or a lot of messages scroll upwards on your screen before your sign in screen, that is an indicator of a problem with either your motherboard, one or more of the hard drives, or one of the peripheral cards plugged into the mother board. If you are not into computer repairs or further searching for solutions, it's time to find a friend builds his/her own computers and can fix or at least diagnose yours.

An alternate way to bypass all of the Windows bullshit stuff is to download and burn onto a DVD the free operating system "Ubuntu" ([www.ubuntu.com/downloads]), then place that DVD into your computer's CD/DVD tray and restart your computer. To force it to read first from the CD/DVD drive, you might need to watch your screen and follow instructions for pressing a certain key prior to launching from the CD/DVD drive. Ubuntu has a "Live Version" which runs directly from the CD/DVD and it will not damage or delete anything from your computer (unless you do something like tell it to delete, etc).

Good Luck and come back here to tell us how things are going. Lots of computer guys here and most are willing to help.
