Do you think the suicide rate would be lower in the US if there wasn’t such easy access to guns or would the same people just find different methods? I know I’ve heard people over here talk about the fear of the pain of hanging or whatever, but then I also know a good few people who did go through with hanging themselves. Have always wondered about the phenomenon in the US though cos as you say the gun-suicide thing does seem to be an epidemic over there.
In Canada, research has found that tighter gun regulations only reduced the incidence of suicide by firearm as a method, but did not change the overall suicide rate. If people want to kill themselves, they'll find a way.
Yeah, good question.
And, I've never understood how someone successfully hangs himself.
Yeah it must take some balls all right. But even more to the point it takes some planning. You’re not going to want to use old rope obviously, you need to find somewhere that will support your weight and you won’t be disturbed (can take a little while especially if you get the drop wrong which most do if they even try the drop) etc. Similar with overdose for most as you probably won’t have the right drugs in sufficient quantities so will need to source and buy. I think what makes the gun approach in the US seem so different to me is that if you have a gun in the house you could kill yourself on a whim, and I think that’s what really makes it so different to what we see over here (although we have a very bad suicide problem here nonetheless).
Yeah, that's exactly right about the guns in the house.
On Thanksgiving Day my grandmother excused herself for a nap and went upstairs to a bedroom where my uncle kept a loaded pistol in the drawer. We don't know if she knew, and if planned, or a 'crime' of opportunity.
But she mimicked one of her employees who had recently killed himself and put a pillow to her body and went for the heart. She was on numerous medications and depressed, and the crazily religious family took her meds cold turkey from her a few days previous.
Closed casket and I sneakily raised the lid, yikes. She was bloated beyond recognition. She was best friends with Jimmy Rodgers' wife and she and her husband drank a few times at bars near Austin with Hank Williams and Ernest Tubb. A pic of all of them together was featured on Ken Burns' country music documentary.
loads of suicides with pills too. wouldnt be surprised if that was more popular than guns.
