Gravity is the fictitious force we ascribe to these things, a powerful way to model and predict what we observe. And gravity is such a gift. Just being able to set things down in a house and have them stay put would be a mess without gravity. And the way it forms gradients in fluids is essential to things like life, convection currents, things floating on water (buoyancy).
