I was an alcoholic once. Then I quit. Exercise helps. Productive hobbies and study help. Quality diet helps a lot. Not being a weak-willed bitch helps the most.

Which creates a positive feedback loop.
Addiction used to he seen as a character-destroying shame. Now it's just passed off as a minor flaw. I'm glad I quit, and ashamed I was ever addicted.
