Once I read an interesting text that compared gold and aluminium, the writer said that if gold disappeared from Earth, we would have a way to replace it with other metals and materials, but the same could not be done in relation to aluminium, because the disappearance of aluminium would make the world collapse.

And the same goes for gold in relation to oil or fuels.

Practically everything you use is petroleum based, whether as fuel, medicine, plastic and other materials in electronic equipment, etc.

Work backed currency is the only thing that works. This removes deflation, inflation, and other such kikery. Read up on what Hitler did to the Deutschmark (That's it's name, right?) when he became leader.

You are right, the issue is "how do you transfer" the "work for one day" to something that is tradable ?

With "paper money" and a minimum of state backed infrastructure it is fairly easy

With electronic money.... not so fast, unless you end up to full big brother style banking
