I love church, I find it super helpful, but boy does it take up so much time of the week. I was trying to workout, since I try to go for 5 ish times a week, and there always seems to be something unexpected that shows up. And on one hand, I get it, they want to hang out with me, but on the other hand their activities are encroaching to the point I can't seem to get anything else done. And sure I could modify my schedule around this, but it seems like this church is so desperate for members, that they almost come of as the mega clingy girlfriend in the process.

What kind of church do you attend?

Baptist

My church is desperate for membership as well, especially the <50 crowd. My former church, also Baptist, not so much.

If they could tone down the desperation and weekly calls for cash, I would love it. But this is a double edged sword i feel like. Since the church lives off donations, but at the same time, talking about money is a touchy subject.

I don't know much about being a Baptist does it cost you money every session?

Technically it does, depends on how you look at it. I have noticed, the pastor has been talking about a lot more. Whilst I do give here and there, there is no expectation to do so, except for the weekly call of asking for more money if the church is under budget

Church should be relatively simple. Gather for doctrinal teaching, and that’s about it. All the rest is window dressing.

Why are you even going to church? It is "super helpful" in what ways?

There are plenty of good and defensible reasons to gather and fellowship with other believers, but I wonder if you care about any of those reasons, or if you're just trying to get brownie points with the Big Fella.

I care about the bible study lessons, Awana and sunday service. The pastor tries to bring up the whole tithing thing a lot, but claims he's not after my money. Part of me is also not used to having friendly people invite me to places, it comes off as weird to me

You need to give. Maybe not to that church (though that is harder to justify), but it is part of the new man that you probably think you are in Christ. Why would you call him "Lord" but not do what he says?

And when I say you "need" to give, it means in two ways:
- moral obligation. It's in the law, and Jesus upheld this specifically.
- for your own benefit. Like "you need to work out" - it is good for you!

Tell them "Awana spend more time apart, it's not you , it's me"

Church is great. Society absolutely needs a strong religion in order to be healthy and prosper. Our strength comes from moral conviction, and only religion can supply that. But five times a week seems excessive, if you are finding that you don't have enough free time. Why not cut it down to twice a week?
