If they told you as a child in school that the earth was flat and motionless, you could have just trusted them, or you could have looked at the horizontal horizon, and the level sea level and thought 'yeah that makes sense'. And they would not know if you thought or trusted until they told you more.

The King of England, Protestant Church, and Catholic Church all told their followers that the earth was flat. A method of control using fear of the unknown. Demons, dragons, and sea creatures all awaited ships that sailed too far. People just believed all of it.
