Should they have followed through?

Mike and VLC creator said no.

FYI - For all those who don't know, FFMPEG is a popular software for multimedia playback. Chrome uses it, and Youtube uses it in part of their pipeline. It's a very important software, up there with the likes of Gstreamer, Ghostscript, GNU pack, etc... Fabrice Bellard started the software, but its really Mike (current project lead) that made FFMPEG what it was today and contributed all the "major" features in ffmpeg.

Yes, agree. Fabrice, along with L. Peter Deutsch (Made 2 lisp compilers, TRAC compiler, co-invented JIT compliation technique, Ghostscript, etc...) are the two best programmers in terms of number of complex programs made. Too bad Peter quit software development...

Bellard's work with the telecom stuff is great - theres alot of detail and things in there that make it difficult, and Bellard was able to do it.
