The 7 year rule is really messed up. It's 7 years from the last audit time. So if they audit from 5 years ago, its actually 5 years + 7 years, or 13 years. This is why they will always use a really long audit year to cover their tracks.
For me they claimed they never received a return at all. This was back when you just sent your shit out by mail, if you weren't the type that was expecting a check you didn't give it another thought.
It's either pay them off to leave you alone or pay a lawyer to take the chance that you don't have to pay them too.
Since I've hired an Accountant they've left me alone.
I did hire an accountant this year, and they still audited me. The IRS is just another political organization at this point. Whenever they "owe" money, they drag it out for as long as humanly possible. If you are owed more than 5K from the IRS like me expect your refund check to take 6 months or more.
