In the instance of honoring the dead, the tattoo is meant to be seen by others. Same idea as a erecting a statue in honor of someone.
It gets people to ask what it's all about, allowing you to spread the legacy of the fallen.
Again, in the VAST majority of cases, tattoos are retarded.

I believe it is better to honor legacy, ink or not. You believe it's better to "look more asthetically pleasing" to others and just remember people in your mind.
Death is a part of life. You're honoring the legacy of those who came before you. You seem to believe this should NEVER be done with ink on the skin. I disagree.
