There are parallels with the Dune spice, but it is actually a strong hypnotic in that it creates mental loops people get stuck in.

Cocaine is a hypnotic.

Spice many consider to be metaphorical for oil, but it is representative of powerful resource. In the books.

John Steinbeck, The Pearl is similar in that it embodies hope and lost and greed and power and they mean something different to everyone, as there are many uses.

There is another drug named spice. It's apparently for total morons.
