This is exactly what I proposed when it was implemented. My suggestion is a forced collapse of blocked users instead.

its likely works the way it does because its easier to program and less effort for the servers to handle
hopefully the admins keep an eye out for people trying to abuse the system to avoid the potential negatives of a block feature
