When people have butcherblock counters can you chop directly on them and wipe them down or are they usually coated with some stuff?

idk, i have marble counters. that's my new desktop. i know you can sand it down and refinish it. don't use it as a cutting board though.

If you use them like they're a cutting board then you're going to get them all cut up like you would a wooden cutting board. Most people just use a cutting board.
If you really wanted to put a butcher block on the island and chop on it then replace it or refinish it every few years when it starts looking especially gnarly I guess you could, but I don't think that's very common.
