I know that you're my friend.
You don't know my name, location, flaws, past, strengths, intentions, or anything else about me except that I'm human. As much as I need a friend right now it's impossible to be someone's friend when you don't know them. Maybe I'm the nigger who keyed your brother's car yesterday. Maybe I would mug you if I got the chance. In the unlikely case you're one of those extremely rare humans who can love ANY other human you still can't be my friend by the conventional meaning of the word. You have to be an acquaintance before you can be a friend. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Do you know whether I would help you if you needed it? Maybe I would give you the shirt off my back. Maybe I would give you my last loaf of bread. But you don't know.
How can you say you would help me out of a tight spot if you don't know me? If I literally showed up at your door in the next ten minutes and asked to borrow your car we both know you wouldn't. Since you don't know me it would be irrational to trust me that much. Tell you what, friend. I need a small loan. Don't know when I can pay you back. How about it? No? Oh, so I'm not that kind of friend. I'm a random voice calling you from the internet and that's all I can be.
Okay Dave.
I try that sometimes. One time in a few hundred it has to really set someone's hair on end.
