I read somewhere that all you commonwealth types say Happy because the King thought Merry sounded too much like drunken debauchery which was obviously to be discouraged. Did it work?

Yep! Just did Christmas morning. The "big" kid was stoked with all the duplo. Family is good, baby is not "well" exactly... somewhere between well and sick, stable and home at least. Merry Christmas!
