Well typically, everything that is purely easthetical with zero meaning whatsoever, that's the fundamental difference with ancestral tattoos from medieval japan or europe or americas or whatever. It wasn't just for fun, it was ranks, family trees, part of magic rituals
Kind of like drug use, back then it wasn't recreational, it was religious except maybe for cocaine in egypt and I'm not even sure, I don't know much about that particular case
