Northerners use a hand crank can opener by attaching it to the top of the can, cutting just the lid itself, leaving the rim on the can.

Southerners attach the hand crank can opener on the side of the can with the crank handle on top, actually cut the side of the can so the top + the rim is cut off and may be reused as a lid.

The Southern way seems easier than the Northern way.

These are two different types of can openers. I'm northern and I only recently discovered the side opener. I didn't know this was a regional thing. The southern (side opener) one is way better imo.

My old school bare bones (amazon.com) can opener will work on the side and the top.

Nice.

This is the side opener I bought not too long ago.
