No one here had a teacher who went off the rez and did some actual instruction? In 8th grade my English teacher couldn't take it anymore and went rogue, she started diagramming sentences. No one's supposed to teach things that work (Phonics, sentence diagramming) anymore, it's all whole language nonsense or whatever Chomsky's discredited theory is called. But the ones who actually know their subject find ways to sneak it in.
One grammar teacher went off the reserve and said " I don't care what anybody says, that Michael Jackson guy is crazy!"
And that's literally all I remember from her class.
That’s how my husband grew up. Wonderful experience for him; he learned in a safe, drama-free environment. But it also means he’s got a huge blind spot where other groups of people are concerned. It wasn’t until I started telling him my stories about getting attacked in the locker room by the Mexicans for being white, or what ESL did to our public school programs, that he ever thought about questioning his assumptions.
If I had a choice for our children, I prefer what he had. But at the same time, with increased safety comes lessened awareness of danger.
