A bit long winded. It's basically saying that McDonalds franchised their brand and collects a sizable portion of their income from franchisees paying them. That's no different than any other franchise, that's the whole point of them.

Yes, franchisees make their money on burgers, McDonalds themselves makes their money on real estate. It’s in the franchisee agreement that corporate gets first dibs on buying back a failed location and they ALWAYS locate in prime areas where the land is worth more than the restaurant itself

In Ray Kroc’s biography he said he didn’t make money selling hamburgers; he made money from owning the property where the burgers were made.
