What's your beef with the sawyer? That was one I was trying to remember. Also always heard at least par comments about it. But no one personally.
1) It doesn't filter as many contaminants as the gravity filters
2) It's really slow to drink from. That's a problem at my current job, I don't have three minutes to stand around and suck on my water bottle
Any other passive device recommendations if not the Sawyer? IIRC, the life straw or whatever has a limited shelf life.
I'm pretty sure the gravity filters are inert, you can sock them away somewhere until you need them. The ones I have are made of ceramic and silver and some other stuff. If you need something for a bugout bag, I recommend just buying a new LifeStraw every year or whatever. If you were planning to live out of your bugout bag for multiple years I suggest coming up with a different plan.
I recommend gravity filters if you can arrange it. LifeStraw type filters are meant for temporary emergencies, not permanent survival, so you shouldn't really need to stock mass quantities of them. Same idea with MREs, you shouldn't be stockpiling multiple years worth of them, just enough to get you by while you get your garden and livestock going
